How to get a job at Primark

What Primark hires for, what it pays, how its short application, online test and interview work, and how to stand out when you apply.

By UK Retail Jobs editorial team — We write plain-English guides to finding and doing retail work in the UK. Every figure is checked against a named source.

Primark hires retail assistants, visual merchandisers, managers and stockroom, night and head-office staff. For a retail assistant job, you apply online on Primark's careers site, and the process has three short steps: a quick form, a 10-minute online test and an interview of about 30 minutes. This guide covers the jobs, the pay Primark publishes, each stage of the application, the kind of questions to expect and how to stand out.

Everything below comes from Primark's own careers pages, adverts and press releases, plus GOV.UK for the legal rules.

What jobs does Primark hire for?

Most Primark jobs are in its stores, and the biggest group by far is retail assistants. Primark says it employs over 30,000 people in the UK across its shops and head office, and more than 80,000 worldwide.

Store jobs

These are the roles Primark lists on its in-store careers page:

  • Retail assistant. You help customers with purchases and returns, keep displays tidy, work the tills, and unpack new deliveries. Primark says you can join with no experience.
  • Visual merchandising. You dress mannequins and keep the right products at the front of the store. Primark expects some visual merchandising experience.
  • Team manager. You look after one department, including its tills and fitting rooms, and lead a team of retail assistants.
  • Department manager, assistant store manager and store manager. These are senior roles. Primark says department managers need retail experience, and it expects the right experience for the roles above that.
  • People and culture. You handle recruitment, training and wellbeing for the staff in one store.
  • Other roles. Some stores have night crews who get the shop ready for the next day. Some also have health and safety or operations managers.

Jobs away from the shop floor

Primark also hires for its supply chain and depots, and for head-office teams such as buying, design, finance and technology. Its early careers scheme is a 12-month placement for university students at its head office in Dublin. Primark's FAQs say it does not run a specific graduate programme.

What does Primark pay?

Primark pays retail assistants in Great Britain at least £13.00 an hour, or £13.71 in London. Primark announced these rates on 10 March 2026, and they started on 1 April 2026.

That is above the legal minimum for every age group. Here is how it compares with the rates the law sets from 1 April 2026:

WhoHourly pay
Primark retail assistant (Great Britain)£13.00 minimum
Primark retail assistant (London)£13.71 minimum
National Living Wage (21 and over)£12.71
Legal minimum, 18 to 20£10.85
Legal minimum, under 18£8.00

The press release says the new rates apply to all its retail assistants in Great Britain, and it does not mention a lower rate for younger staff. Still, check the pay on each advert before you apply. The release covers England, Scotland and Wales only, so this matters most if you live in Northern Ireland.

When we checked in September 2026, live Primark adverts in Oxford, Bolton and Eastbourne all showed £13.00 an hour. Primark does not publish pay for its manager, night or depot roles on the pages we checked, so look at each advert. For a wider view of shop pay, see our guide to retail pay in 2026.

Staff discount and benefits

Primark gives staff a 15% discount all year round, according to its March 2026 press release. Its adverts say you can use the discount in any store.

The adverts and benefits pages also list:

  • A pension, which Primark describes as generous.
  • Paid holiday based on the hours you work.
  • Family benefits for store and depot staff, with better maternity, paternity, adoption and surrogacy pay.
  • Wellbeing support, including a free and confidential employee assistance service for money, legal and mental health worries.
  • A referral scheme that rewards staff who bring in new colleagues.
  • Training schemes called Grow With Us, which prepare retail assistants for management.

What hours and contracts does Primark offer?

Primark hires for both full-time and part-time jobs. All three store adverts we checked were for fixed-term contracts, and each one gives the weekly hours.

Here are three real examples from adverts we checked in September 2026:

StoreHours a weekContract
Oxford35 to 37.5 (full-time)Fixed term, no end date shown
Bolton8 to 20 (part-time)Fixed term to 9 January 2027
Eastbourne8, weekends onlyFixed term into January 2027

Shifts vary and can include mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. The adverts say the shift pattern will be discussed at interview. A weekend-only job like the Eastbourne one can suit students, so our guide to part-time retail jobs for students is worth a read.

Can you work at Primark at 16?

You can apply once you are above the compulsory school leaving age where you live. Primark's adverts set this as a basic rule. In England and Wales, that means from the last Friday in June, as long as you will be 16 by the end of the summer holidays.

There is one limit. Primark's adverts say that for any role with hours before 6am or after 11pm, you must be 18 or over. The law also limits night work for 16 and 17-year-olds, and GOV.UK says they can never work between midnight and 4am.

In England, you must also stay in some form of education or training until 18. You can still work part-time alongside it.

How does the Primark application work?

For a retail assistant job there are three steps, and each one is short. Manager roles have more stages and take longer.

Retail assistant: three steps

  1. Online form. Primark says this takes a few minutes. It asks a few questions to check the job is a good fit for you.
  2. Situational judgement test. This takes about 10 minutes. You read situations a retail assistant might face and pick the most effective and the least effective response from a list. You must choose one best and one worst answer before you can move on.
  3. Interview. One of the store's managers talks to you for about 30 minutes, either in the store or on a video call. You can ask your own questions too.

Primark's FAQs say you get at least one practice question before any online test begins. Do it carefully, because it shows you exactly how the test works. Our guide to retail interview questions covers the interview stage in more depth.

Manager roles: four steps

  1. Form and CV. You upload your CV and fill in a short form.
  2. Phone call. A recruiter tells you about the role and asks about your experience.
  3. Task-based assessment. Only some roles have this. It can take up to 45 minutes online, or it may happen in a store.
  4. Interview. An interviewer and a note-taker talk to you for up to an hour, in person or by video. Some roles ask you to prepare a presentation, and an interview in a store may include a skills-based task.

Is there a trial shift?

None of the Primark pages we checked mention a trial shift for retail assistants. The published process ends with the interview. If a store asks you to do any work before you are hired, ask whether it is paid.

What will they ask in a Primark interview?

Primark says its interviews are structured, with open-ended questions about your skills and experience. We have not copied questions from forums. Instead, the questions below match what Primark's adverts say it wants: people who care about customers, communicate well, stay organised and take an interest in fashion.

Use the STAR method to answer. Describe the Situation, the Task, the Action you took and the Result. Keep each answer to about two minutes.

"Tell me about a time you helped someone who was unhappy."

  • Situation: A customer at your weekend café job was upset because their order was wrong.
  • Task: You needed to calm things down and put it right quickly.
  • Action: You listened, said sorry, remade the order and checked back with them later.
  • Result: They left happy and thanked your manager.

"How would you keep your area tidy on a very busy day?"

  • Situation: Think of a busy time, such as a school event or a sale at a shop you worked in.
  • Task: You had to keep things in order while people kept coming.
  • Action: You tidied little and often, put items back as you passed, and asked a teammate to swap tasks when one area got too busy.
  • Result: The space stayed usable and nothing got lost.

Tidying little and often, like clearing the fitting room rail, is a good example to use in your interview.

"What do you like about Primark?"

Be specific. Mention a range you like, how busy the stores are, or the chance to train for management. Show that you have been in a Primark store recently and looked around with a worker's eye.

"When can you work?"

This matters more than you might think. Be honest, and say clearly which days, evenings and weekends you can do. If you have a visa that limits your hours, the adverts ask you to check the contracted hours first.

How can you stand out?

The best way to stand out at Primark is to show you are ready for a busy, fast-moving shop floor. Here is how.

  • Visit a store first. Walk round at a busy time and watch the tills, fitting rooms and restocking. You can then talk about the job in real detail.
  • Show you care about standards. Primark's adverts talk about keeping high standards. Give an example of a time you got the small details right.
  • Talk about fashion, briefly. The adverts ask for an interest in style and trends. One or two lines about what you like to wear or spot in store is enough.
  • Be flexible. Weekend, evening and holiday cover is valuable in a big store. The more you can offer, the better.
  • Treat the online test seriously. Find a quiet place, read each situation twice, and think about what would help the customer and the team most.
  • Prepare questions. Primark's FAQs invite you to ask questions. Ask about training, the Grow With Us schemes or what a normal shift looks like.
  • Dress smart-casual. Primark's FAQs suggest this, with comfort in mind. Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early, or join a video call 5 minutes early to test your sound.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CV to apply to Primark?

Not for most retail assistant jobs, which start with a short online form. Manager roles ask you to upload a CV. Primark does not accept CVs sent directly, so always apply through a live advert. A cover letter is optional.

Can I apply again if I am turned down?

Yes, but you may have to wait. Primark's FAQs say that if a retail assistant application is unsuccessful, you might not be able to reapply for up to three months.

Should I apply on Primark's site and on a job board?

No. Primark says its job board adverts link to its own careers site, so apply once for each job. You get an email to confirm your application has arrived.

Does Primark offer adjustments for the application?

Yes. Primark says it will adjust its process to remove barriers, and each advert gives an email address to contact if you need extra support at any stage.

Does Primark hire for Christmas?

Two of the three store adverts we checked in September 2026 were fixed-term contracts ending in January 2027, which covers the Christmas period. Our Christmas retail jobs guide explains how seasonal hiring works across big retailers.
