How to get a job at Greggs

What Greggs hires for, the pay it puts on its adverts, its staff perks, how the application works, and how to stand out when you apply to a Greggs shop.

By UK Retail Jobs editorial team — We write plain-English guides to finding and doing retail work in the UK. Every figure is checked against a named source.

A young bakery shop worker in a plain charcoal polo shirt holds a tray of golden pastries behind the hot food counter of a UK high street bakery.

Greggs hires team members, shift managers and shop managers for its shops, plus bakery, warehouse and driving staff for its supply chain. You apply online through the Greggs careers site. For most shop jobs you fill in a short application and then have an interview, where you also talk about the shifts you can work. This guide covers the jobs, the pay Greggs puts on its adverts, its perks, the application steps and how to make your application stand out.

Everything below comes from Greggs' own careers pages, its job adverts and its company results. Each pay figure says when we checked it.

What jobs does Greggs hire for?

Most Greggs jobs are in its shops, and they are the easiest place to start. Greggs also hires for its bakeries, distribution centres and head office.

Greggs is growing, which means new jobs. Its half-year results said it had 2,773 shops trading on 27 June 2026, and it expected to open 100 to 110 more shops (after closures) during 2026. Greggs says over half of its new shops in the first half of 2026 were away from the high street, in places such as petrol forecourts, supermarkets, retail parks, hospitals and university campuses.

Shop jobs

  • Team member. You serve customers, prepare food, look after the ovens, fill the displays and keep the shop clean. You may also pack orders for delivery apps, Click + Collect and drive-thru. Greggs says you do not need any experience.
  • Shift manager. You run the shop when the manager is not there, lead the team on your shift and make sure food safety and hygiene rules are followed. Greggs prefers people who have supervised others before.
  • Shop manager. You lead the whole shop: hiring, training, sales, waste and standards. Greggs asks for supervisory or line management experience.

Supply chain jobs

Greggs makes much of its food in its own bakeries and moves it through its own distribution centres. Its supply chain page lists operatives, team leaders, supervisors, maintenance engineers and HGV drivers (Class 1 and Class 2). Greggs says operatives need no experience, and some sites run shifts around the clock.

A note on franchised shops

Not every Greggs shop is run by Greggs. At the end of June 2026, 627 of its shops were franchised, run by partner businesses. If you see a job at a Greggs shop inside a motorway services, station or supermarket, check who the employer is. The pay and perks may differ from the ones below.

You can see the Greggs jobs we list on our Greggs jobs search.

How much does Greggs pay?

Greggs puts the hourly rate on every shop advert. When we checked in September 2026, team member adverts paid £12.91 an hour, or £11.03 an hour if you are under 18.

That is above the legal minimum for every age group. The table below shows what we saw on Greggs adverts in September 2026, next to the legal minimum from 1 April 2026.

RolePay on Greggs adverts (September 2026)How it is paid
Team member, 18 and over£12.91 an hourWeekly
Team member, under 18£11.03 an hourWeekly
Shift manager£13.80 to £14.00 an hour in the adverts we checkedWeekly
Shop manager£37,914 a year plus commission, for a 42-hour week in central London (July 2026 advert)Salary
Site services team leader (distribution centre, temporary)£13.96 an hour plus premiums; the advert says about £34,000 a year, depending on the shift patternHourly

Some shift manager adverts say the hourly rate includes a 20p "band increment". The adverts do not explain the bands, and not every advert has one. Always check the rate on the advert you apply for.

For comparison, the legal minimum from 1 April 2026 is £12.71 an hour at 21 and over, £10.85 at 18 to 20, and £8.00 for under-18s. Apprentices get £8.00 if they are under 19 or in the first year of their apprenticeship. So an 18-year-old team member at Greggs gets over £2 an hour more than the legal minimum for their age.

How many hours will you get?

Hours vary a lot between shops. Team member adverts we looked at offered contracts from 4 hours a week up to 16 to 30 hours. Many were for 8 to 16 hours. Shift manager adverts offered 20 to 30 hours. Each advert says the contract hours, and adverts say the shift pattern can be discussed at interview.

What perks does Greggs offer?

The best-known perk is the staff discount. Greggs says you and one family member get up to 50% off Greggs products, and you get free hot drinks on shift.

Greggs lists these benefits on its careers site and its adverts:

  • Profit share. Greggs says it shares 10% of its profits with colleagues each year.
  • Paid breaks. Your breaks on shift are paid.
  • Pension. Greggs matches your pension payments up to 7%.
  • Share plans. You can buy Greggs shares at a discount.
  • Holiday that grows. Your holiday goes up the longer you stay, to a maximum of 6 weeks a year.
  • Family leave. Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay.
  • Support. A wellbeing app with a virtual GP, and an employee assistance programme for mental health, money and legal worries.
  • Long service awards and savings on everyday shopping and leisure.

Some perks may depend on how long you have worked there. Ask at interview if something matters to you.

How does the Greggs application work?

You apply online, and for most shop jobs the steps are an application, an interview and then checks before your offer. The whole thing is done through the Greggs careers site.

Step 1: Find a job and apply

Search for jobs on the Greggs vacancy search site. The careers site splits jobs into retail, supply chain and head office, and each advert says whether it is permanent or temporary. Then fill in the online application. Greggs' recruitment privacy notice says it asks for your contact details, your work history and any unspent criminal convictions.

Move quickly. One team member advert we looked at was posted on 22 September 2026 and closed three days later. Another, posted the same day, closed after six days.

Step 2: Tests or an assessment day (some roles)

Greggs' privacy notice says it uses online ability and psychometric testing providers, and it mentions assessment days. It does not say which roles use them. If you are sent a test, do it somewhere quiet and read each question carefully.

Step 3: Interview

Greggs adverts say your shift pattern and availability "can be discussed at interview". So expect questions about the days and times you can work, as well as about you. Greggs keeps notes from your interview as part of its recruitment records.

A woman with a small open diary sits at a table in the quiet seating area of a bakery shop, ready to talk about the shifts she can work.
Greggs adverts say your shift pattern can be discussed at interview, so know which days and times you can do.

Step 4: Checks and your offer

Before a job offer is confirmed, Greggs says it checks your right to work in the UK. You will need a document such as a passport or birth certificate. It may also contact your references. Its privacy notice also lists DBS checks among its pre-employment checks.

Is there a trial shift?

We could not find a trial shift mentioned on any Greggs page. Some shops may still ask you to come in for a short session, so ask the person who invites you to interview.

Training when you start

Greggs says new team members start with 12 weeks of blended training. It mixes learning on the job, online modules and regular reviews with your shop manager. Managers have a separate 12-week development programme.

What questions might Greggs ask at interview?

Greggs does not publish its interview questions. But its adverts say what it wants: fast and friendly service, a willingness to learn, reliability and the right availability. Prepare for questions on each of those.

A good way to answer "tell me about a time" questions is the STAR method: the Situation, the Task you had, the Action you took and the Result. Keep each answer to about a minute. Here are outlines in our own words.

"Why do you want to work at Greggs?"

Keep it real and short. You might say you like how busy and friendly the shops are, that you want to work with food, or that the hours fit your week. Mention one perk or fact you found, such as the training plan. Do not just say "for the money", even if that is part of it.

"Tell me about a time you gave good customer service."

  • Situation: You were helping at a school fair and the queue was long.
  • Task: Keep people happy while serving quickly.
  • Action: You greeted each person, got orders ready while they paid, and told the queue how long the wait was.
  • Result: The stall sold out and people thanked you for being quick.

Any example works: a job, volunteering, sport or helping a relative.

"How would you handle a busy lunchtime rush?"

Food-to-go shops are often busiest at breakfast and lunchtime. Show that you can stay calm, keep moving and work as a team. Talk about a time you had lots to do at once, how you chose what to do first, and how it turned out.

"Tell me about a time you worked in a team."

  • Situation: A group project at college where one person fell behind.
  • Task: Get the project in on time.
  • Action: You offered to share their part and set up a quick check-in each week.
  • Result: You handed it in on time and the group got a good mark.

"Why is food safety important?"

You do not need a food hygiene certificate for a team member job. But you should know the basics: washing your hands, keeping food at the right temperature, and following the shop's rules on allergens and use-by dates. Say you would always follow the training and ask if you were unsure.

"Which hours can you work?"

Be honest and clear. Say which days and times you can do, and whether you can cover extra shifts sometimes. Early mornings and weekends are often useful to a shop, but do not promise hours you cannot keep.

For more practice, our guide to writing a retail CV shows how to turn school, volunteering and home life into examples you can use in an interview too.

How can you stand out when applying to Greggs?

Show that you are reliable, friendly and ready to work at speed. Those are the things Greggs asks for in almost every shop advert.

  • Apply fast. Adverts can close within days, so set up job alerts and apply as soon as you see a job near you.
  • Be clear about your hours. Greggs adverts say shifts can be discussed at interview. A clear, honest answer about when you can work is one of the most useful things you can give.
  • Talk about speed and service. Give an example of a time you worked quickly without being rude or making mistakes.
  • Visit the shop first. Buy something and watch how the team works. You can mention what you noticed at interview.
  • Mention the delivery side. Many shops take delivery app and Click + Collect orders. Show you are happy to handle orders from more than one place at once.
  • Apply to more than one shop. Each advert is for one shop. If there are several near you, apply to each one that fits your hours.

Many shops pack delivery app and Click + Collect orders, so show you can juggle orders from more than one place.

If you have not worked before, that is fine. Greggs says team members need no experience. Our guide to retail jobs with no experience has more ideas on what to put in your application.

If you have had a hard time finding work

Greggs runs a programme called Fresh Start. It is for people who have gaps in their work history, or who may not feel ready for work, because of what has happened in their lives. Greggs says Fresh Start has reached over 3,000 candidates and led to over 110 job offers. Details are on the About Greggs page of its careers site.

Can students work at Greggs?

Yes, many shop jobs suit students. Some contracts are short, from 4 to 16 hours a week, and adverts say the shift pattern can be discussed at interview.

Greggs adverts give a separate rate for under-18s, so younger applicants can apply for some jobs. If an advert has a minimum age, it will say so. Read our guide to part-time retail jobs for students for tips on fitting shifts around your studies.
