How to get a job at B&M
What B&M hires for, the pay in its adverts, why many shop-floor jobs start with a visit to the store, and how to prepare for a B&M interview.
By UK Retail Jobs editorial team — We write plain-English guides to finding and doing retail work in the UK. Every figure is checked against a named source.

B&M hires customer service assistants, supervisors, managers, security officers and warehouse staff across the UK. For most shop-floor and supervisor jobs, you start by visiting your nearest B&M store and asking the managers about vacancies. Management, security and warehouse jobs are advertised on B&M's own jobs website. This guide covers the jobs, the pay B&M shows in its adverts, how applying works, and how to prepare for the interview.
Everything below comes from B&M's careers pages, its live job adverts and its latest annual results. Every pay figure says when we checked it.
What does B&M do, and how big is it?
B&M is a value retailer that sells variety goods. It stocks a wide range of everyday items at low prices, and some stores have a garden centre.
B&M's results for the year to 28 March 2026 say it had 799 B&M stores in the UK. The same group also runs 342 stores under the Heron Foods and B&M Express names, plus 147 B&M stores in France. It employs close to 40,000 people across the group.
B&M also plans to keep growing. Its results say it aims to open about 25 to 35 new B&M stores in the UK each year. New stores need whole new teams, so new-store adverts are a good way in.
What jobs does B&M hire for?
B&M hires for three main areas: stores, distribution centres and its support centre (head office) in Liverpool. Most jobs are in stores.
Store jobs
B&M's careers site lists these store roles:
- Customer service assistant. You serve customers on the tills, fill shelves, keep the store tidy and help people find things. This is the main entry-level job.
- Supervisor. Supervisors come in three types: customer service (tills and cash office), floor (shop-floor standards) and replenishment (stock and the stockroom). You support a manager and lead the team on shift.
- Floor, replenishment and customer service manager. These are full-time department manager jobs. Each one runs one part of the store.
- Deputy store manager and store manager. You run the whole store, its team and its results.
B&M also advertises for security officers in some stores. The adverts we read ask for someone calm under pressure. They say you do not need security experience.

Warehouse and distribution jobs
B&M says it has five distribution centres. Four are in the North West (two in Speke, one in Runcorn and one in Middlewich) and one is in Bedford. Warehouse colleagues pick stock and build pallets ready to go to the stores, using low-level order pickers, which are small powered trucks. The Bedford advert we read said full training is given and experience is not essential.
Contracts and hours
B&M says its assistant and supervisor roles come with flexible contracts and part-time hours. The assistant adverts we read offered between 8 and 20 hours a week. Stores trade seven days a week, so every store advert asks you to be flexible about evenings and weekends.
What does B&M pay?
B&M's assistant adverts pay the legal minimum for your age. Supervisors, security officers and warehouse staff are paid a little more. Here is what B&M's own adverts showed when we checked in September 2026.
| Role | Pay in B&M's adverts, September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Customer service assistant | £10.85 to £12.71 an hour, depending on age |
| Supervisor (customer service, floor or replenishment) | £12.89 an hour |
| Security officer | £13.21 an hour in most adverts (£14.21 in some) |
| Floor, replenishment or customer service manager | £27,873 a year in most adverts that gave a figure (£29,953 in a few, in west London and Bristol) |
| Deputy store manager, store manager | "Competitive + Bonus" (no figure given) |
| Warehouse colleague, Bedford | £13.00 an hour, plus £1.90 an hour on nights and 50p an hour at weekends |
How this compares with the legal minimum
From April 2026, the National Living Wage for people aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour. The rate for 18 to 20-year-olds is £10.85. So B&M's advertised assistant pay matches the legal minimum for each of those ages.
The assistant adverts we read did not give an under-18 rate. If you are 16 or 17, ask the store whether it takes on under-18s before you apply.
Bonuses and extra pay
The Bedford warehouse advert offered a picking bonus of up to £3.00 an hour on top of the base rate. It also offered weekly pay. Management adverts mention a bonus but do not say how much. To compare with another discount retailer, read our guide on how to get a job at Aldi.
What benefits and staff discount does B&M offer?
B&M gives every colleague a 10% staff discount from their first week. It also runs "double discount days" through the year for colleagues and their families.
B&M's benefits page lists these as well:
- Holiday. 28 days a year, pro rata for part-timers, rising to 33 days with long service. How much you get depends on your role and how long you have worked there.
- Benefits portal. Discounts at other retailers and in hospitality, savings on supermarket shopping, and cheaper health care and life insurance.
- Pension. You are enrolled in the Nest workplace pension.
- Refer a friend. A reward if you recommend someone who gets a job. The rules depend on the role.
- Free eye tests. For colleagues who use a computer as a regular part of their job.
- Long service. A discount card for life after 25 years' service.
The Bedford warehouse advert added that the discount works at Heron Foods too, with 20% discount events through the year. It also listed a subsidised canteen and free parking at the site.
How do you apply for a job at B&M?
How you apply depends on the job. For store assistant and supervisor roles in most of the UK, you ask in the store. For management, security and warehouse roles, you apply online.
Store assistant and supervisor jobs: ask in store
B&M's careers site says it advertises and recruits store colleagues and supervisors directly in its stores. It asks you to visit your nearest store and speak to a member of the management team. You can find your nearest store using the store finder on B&M's main website.
This is different from most big retailers, so plan your visit:
- Pick a quiet time. Mid-morning on a weekday is usually calmer than a Saturday afternoon.
- Ask a colleague for the manager on duty. Say you are interested in working there and ask if they have vacancies.
- Bring a short CV. One page is enough. Our guide to writing a retail CV shows you what to include.
- Know your availability. Be ready to say which days, evenings and weekends you can work.
- Be polite and brief. Managers are busy. Thank them and ask how you will hear back.

When we checked, B&M's jobs website did show a few assistant adverts online, all of them in Northern Ireland. Check both: the website and your local store.
Management, security and warehouse jobs: apply online
These roles are on B&M's jobs website. You can search by keyword and location, create an account and set up job alerts. The adverts show a closing date, and many say roles "don't tend to be around for long". Apply early.
At the Bedford distribution centre, the advert said B&M was running a fast-track recruitment process with weekly site tours for people thinking of starting.
After you apply: interviews and trial shifts
B&M's careers pages do not set out its interview stages. So treat any invitation you get as your guide. It should tell you who you will meet and what to bring.
Some employers ask you to do a trial shift. If B&M asks you to do one, ask beforehand how long it lasts and whether it is paid. For managers, B&M's development page says deputy and store managers start with an induction, with their first few days spent learning about the business away from the store.
What might B&M ask at interview?
B&M does not publish its interview questions. But its adverts and results say clearly what it wants, so you can prepare answers that match.
What B&M looks for
B&M's adverts ask for a "can-do" attitude, team players, and people who "get the job done". Its results list five values: delighting customers, behaving like owners, working as one team, keeping things simple and agile, and creating opportunity for all. The adverts also talk a lot about speed.
Questions to prepare for, with STAR outlines
STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. Describe the situation briefly, say what you had to do, explain what you did, and finish with how it turned out. Here are questions that fit what B&M asks for, with outline answers in our own words.
"Tell me about a time you worked well in a team."
- Situation: a busy Saturday at a part-time job, or a school event you helped run.
- Task: the team had too much to do in too little time.
- Action: you offered to take on a job nobody wanted, and kept others updated.
- Result: the work got done on time, and your manager thanked the team.
"How would you deal with an unhappy customer?"
- Situation: a customer was upset that an item was out of stock.
- Task: calm them down and help if you could.
- Action: you listened, said sorry, checked the stockroom and suggested a similar product.
- Result: the customer left happy with an alternative.
"Tell me about a time you had to work quickly."
- Situation: a delivery arrived late, just before a busy period.
- Task: get stock on the shelves fast without cutting corners.
- Action: you sorted the most popular items first and worked with a colleague.
- Result: the key shelves were full before the rush.
"Why do you want to work at B&M?"
This one does not need a STAR answer. Be honest and specific. You might mention the value it offers customers, the variety of products, or that it promotes from within. B&M's assistant adverts say 80% of its managers are "home grown".
For supervisor and manager roles, expect questions about leading a team. Have an example ready of a time you coached someone or improved how a task was done.

How can you stand out when applying to B&M?
The best way to stand out is to show you are flexible, quick and happy to help anywhere in the store. B&M's adverts return to these points again and again.
Show your flexibility
Every store advert we read asked for flexibility across evenings and weekends. If you can offer weekend shifts or late finishes, say so clearly. It can matter as much as experience.
Show you like a fast pace
B&M's adverts describe its stores as fast-paced, trading seven days a week. Give an example of a time you stayed calm and got things done in a busy setting. This could be from work, school, sport or volunteering.
Look out for new stores
When B&M opens a new store, it hires a whole team at once. We saw several new-store adverts when we checked. If a B&M is opening near you, ask about jobs early.
Ask about work experience
B&M says it gave retail work experience to 3,172 people in its last financial year. It says more than 60% of them went on to work for B&M. If you are out of work, ask your Jobcentre work coach or the store whether any placements are available near you. Our guide to retail jobs with no experience has more ideas.
Think about where it could lead
B&M says it develops managers from within, and its careers pages share stories of staff who started as pricers or warehouse operatives and became managers. It runs a Future Leaders Apprenticeship Programme with an ILM Level 3 qualification in leadership and management. Mention that you would like to grow with the company, if that is true.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience to work at B&M?
Not for assistant jobs. B&M's assistant adverts say retail or customer service experience is a bonus but not essential. Supervisor and manager jobs do ask for experience of leading a team.
Can I apply for a B&M store job online?
Sometimes. B&M says most assistant and supervisor jobs are recruited in store, so the best first step is to visit your local branch. Management, security and warehouse roles are on its jobs website.
Is B&M a good part-time job for students?
It can be. Assistant roles are part-time, with contracts from 8 hours a week in the adverts we read, and weekend shifts are often needed. See our guide to part-time retail jobs for students.
Does the B&M staff discount work at Heron Foods?
B&M's Bedford warehouse advert says the 10% colleague discount works at both B&M and Heron Foods. The benefits page describes it as a 10% in-store discount from week one.
How old do you have to be to work at B&M?
B&M's careers pages do not state a minimum age. The assistant adverts we read gave pay rates from age 18 upwards only, so ask your local store if you are younger.
