How to get a job at Sainsbury's
What Sainsbury's hires for, the pay it advertises, its staff discount, how the online assessment and interview work, and how to prepare your answers.
By UK Retail Jobs editorial team — We write plain-English guides to finding and doing retail work in the UK. Every figure is checked against a named source.

Sainsbury's hires all year for store, night, online and Argos roles, and most jobs need no experience. You apply on its careers website, may take a short online assessment, then book an interview online. When we checked in September 2026, its store adverts paid £13.23 an hour, or £14.54 in London.
This guide explains the roles, the pay and benefits Sainsbury's publishes, each step of the application, and how to prepare for the interview. Every figure says where it comes from and when we checked it. We are an independent job site and are not connected to Sainsbury's.
What jobs does Sainsbury's hire for?
Most Sainsbury's jobs are in its stores, but it also hires drivers, managers, warehouse staff and office teams. Its careers site says it has about 1,400 supermarkets and convenience stores, over 148,000 staff, and more than 60,000 roles to fill each year.
The group also owns Argos, so some store jobs are for Argos counters inside Sainsbury's supermarkets. You apply for these on the same careers site.
Store roles
The main entry-level job is Customer Assistant. The work mixes serving customers, filling shelves, picking online orders and moving stock. Sainsbury's is clear that you will be on your feet a lot and that some loads are heavy.
Other store roles you will see advertised include:
- Customer Assistant – Nights. Filling shelves overnight so the store is ready for the morning.
- Customer Advisor – Argos. Working the tills and collection counter in an Argos store or an Argos inside a Sainsbury's.
- Online team roles. Picking online grocery orders is part of many store jobs, and some managers lead the online team.
Drivers
Sainsbury's hires drivers for its Groceries Online and Fast-Track Delivery services. Its careers site says the van and kit are provided, shifts are given at least three weeks ahead, and its drivers range in age from 18 to 75.
The London driver advert we saw asked for a full UK or EU driving licence held for at least 12 months, with no more than six points. The job was driving a 3.5 tonne refrigerated van.

Store management
Manager roles include Customer and Trading Manager, Customer Experience Manager and Food Manager. They lead teams on the shop floor, at night or in the online team. You will need a CV to apply for these, and the interview is different (see below).
How much does Sainsbury's pay?
Sainsbury's publishes its hourly rate. In January 2026 it announced a 5% rise for hourly-paid staff, taking pay to £13.23 an hour nationally and £14.54 in London from March 2026.
The store adverts we checked in September 2026 matched those rates.
| Role (from Sainsbury's adverts, September 2026) | Pay shown on the advert |
|---|---|
| Customer Assistant (outside London) | £13.23 an hour |
| Customer Assistant (London stores) | £14.54 an hour |
| Customer Assistant – Nights | £13.23 an hour |
| Customer Advisor – Argos | £13.23 an hour |
| Customer Delivery Driver (one London store) | £16.04 an hour |
| Customer and Trading Manager | From £31,700 a year |
| Customer Experience Manager or Food Manager | From £32,700 a year (from £36,450 in the London stores we saw) |
For comparison, the legal minimum for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026. Sainsbury's hourly rate is 52p above that. The night role advert we saw showed the standard rate, and we did not see a separate night premium published.
Pay can change, so always check the rate on the advert before you apply. Sainsbury's also says the hiring team will talk about pay at your interview.
What benefits and staff discount do you get?
Sainsbury's staff get a discount card, free food on shift, a pension with employer matching and several other perks. The details below come from its own adverts and careers pages.
- Staff discount. 10% off at Sainsbury's, Argos, Tu and Habitat, rising to 15% at Sainsbury's on Fridays and Saturdays. The careers site says a nominated second person can use it too. One Argos advert says the discount starts after four weeks.
- Free food. Adverts say free food and hot drinks are provided for staff in all stores.
- Pension. Sainsbury's says it will match between 4% and 7.5% of your pension payments. You are automatically enrolled if you meet the conditions.
- Life cover. Up to six times your pay, depending on your pension choices.
- Money help. Discounted shares, interest-free season ticket loans for travel, and a pay advance scheme.
- Wellbeing. A 24/7 employee assistance programme and an online wellbeing platform.
Sainsbury's says its discount can save a staff member over £600 a year on an £80 weekly shop. That is its own estimate, so your saving depends on what you buy.
How do you apply for a job at Sainsbury's?
You apply online through the Sainsbury's careers site. For store roles, the usual steps are an online form, an online assessment for some roles, then an interview you book yourself.
Here is how it works, based on Sainsbury's own help pages:
- Find a job. Search by location on the careers site. Each store advert shows the hours, the contract type and an "availability window" of the days and times you would need to be free.
- Fill in the form. Most store roles do not need a CV. Sainsbury's says you do need one for retail management and head office roles.
- Take the online assessment. Some roles ask you to complete one before the interview. Some adverts say the highest scorers are offered interviews first.
- Book your interview. For store roles, you are invited to pick an interview slot online.
- Have your interview. It may be in store or on Microsoft Teams.
- Right-to-work check. You will be asked for proof that you can work in the UK, at the application stage and again at interview.
- Hear back. The store or recruitment team tells you the result. If you want an update, Sainsbury's says to contact the store you applied to.

Is there a trial shift?
Sainsbury's careers pages do not mention a trial shift for store roles. Expect the online assessment and the interview instead. If a store asks you to do one, ask whether it is paid and how long it lasts.
Watch out for fake job offers
Sainsbury's says it only takes applications through its official careers site. It does not ask for personal details or documents through social media or messaging apps. If a message asks you to do that, do not reply.
What is the Sainsbury's interview like?
The interview is competency-based. That means you are asked to describe real times you showed a skill, and how you would handle made-up situations at work.
Sainsbury's interview guide, updated in January 2026, says staff without management duties are assessed against its three "Valued Behaviours":
- Own it. Taking responsibility for results, speaking up, and standing by decisions once they are made.
- Make it better. Trying new ideas, finding simpler ways to work, adapting to change and giving honest feedback.
- Be human. Making people feel welcome and heard, building trust, and thinking like a customer.
You will also get one question about the role itself. For a Customer Assistant, that could be about serving customers or keeping shelves full.
For manager roles, the questions follow four "Leadership Performance Expectations": Obsessed with customers, Obsessed with performance, Lead beyond boundaries and Lead fearless teams. The guide says to expect two questions on each. Depending on the grade, there may be more than one interview.
Sainsbury's recommends the STAR method for answers: the Situation, your Task, the Action you took, and the Result. It also suggests using a different example for each question, rather than the same story twice.

Sainsbury's interview questions and how to answer them
Sainsbury's does not publish its exact questions. The ones below are examples we wrote around its published values, with an outline for each answer. Use your own real stories.
"Tell us about a time you spotted a problem and sorted it out."
This tests Own it.
- Situation: At your part-time café job, the milk fridge was not cooling properly one morning.
- Task: You were on shift alone for the first hour.
- Action: You moved the milk to the other fridge, put a note on the broken one and told your manager straight away.
- Result: Nothing was wasted, and the repair was booked that day.
"Tell us about a time you found a better way of doing something."
This tests Make it better.
- Situation: At school, your team's stock of sports kit was always hard to find.
- Task: You offered to sort it.
- Action: You grouped the kit by size and added a simple sign-out sheet.
- Result: Sessions started on time, and less kit went missing.
"Tell us about a time you helped someone who was upset."
This tests Be human. Pick an example where you listened first and stayed calm. Say what you did to help, and how the person felt afterwards. Volunteering, caring for a family member or a school role all count.
"You are filling shelves and a customer asks for help. What would you do?"
This is a made-up scenario, so you do not need a past example. Explain that you would stop and help, walk the customer to the product if you can, and then go back to your task. Mention that you would ask a colleague if you did not know the answer.
How can you stand out?
Show that you are free when the store needs you, that you understand the job, and that you care about customers. These tips are specific to how Sainsbury's hires.
- Match the availability window. Each advert lists the days and times you need to be free. Sainsbury's says you can still apply if yours is similar, but a close match helps.
- Do the online assessment carefully. It can decide who gets an interview first, so find a quiet place and take your time.
- Learn the three values. Have one short story ready for Own it, Make it better and Be human.
- Show you are happy to do physical work. Adverts are clear that the job is busy and involves heavy lifting. Say that you are fine with that.
- Be ready for digital tools. Adverts ask for people who are confident learning new technology. Say so, and give an example if you have one.
- Apply early. Adverts show a closing date, and some say jobs may close quickly.
If you have never had a job before, our guide to Christmas retail jobs explains how a seasonal role can give you your first experience.
Does Sainsbury's hire for Christmas?
Yes. Its careers site says Christmas 2026 roles go live from 5 October. It had not said how many roles it would offer when we checked.
Last year, Sainsbury's and Argos announced 19,000 Christmas roles: 17,000 at Sainsbury's and 2,000 at Argos. Those seasonal staff were on fixed-term contracts of four to 12 weeks. The 2026 total may be different.
Christmas roles are a common way in, because you get trained and gain recent experience. Permanent jobs are advertised all year too, so look at both.
Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be to work at Sainsbury's?
It depends on the role. The Customer Assistant adverts we saw set a minimum age of 18, because of the hours and because you may sell alcohol. Some Argos adverts only ask that you are over school-leaving age. Check the advert for each job.
Does Sainsbury's offer apprenticeships?
Its graduate scheme runs for two years, with three eight-month placements, and applications for 2026 have closed. Sainsbury's says its apprentice, intern and career-changer programmes are launching in 2026, so check its early careers page for dates.
How long does it take to hear back?
Sainsbury's says you can expect to hear within two to four weeks for most store roles. Head office roles can take longer. Interview dates are sometimes limited, so book quickly when you are invited. If you have not heard anything, contact the store you applied to.
Do I need a CV to apply to Sainsbury's?
Not usually for store roles. Sainsbury's says you need a CV for retail management and head office roles. For other jobs, you upload one only if the application asks for it.
Can I work at Sainsbury's part-time?
Yes. Many store adverts are part-time, such as 16 or 17 hours a week. Your shifts are planned within the availability window on the advert and shared three weeks ahead.
