How to get a job at Morrisons

What Morrisons hires for, what it pays, its staff discount, how the online test and interview work, and how to stand out when you apply.

By UK Retail Jobs editorial team — We write plain-English guides to finding and doing retail work in the UK. Every figure is checked against a named source.

A young Sikh man in a navy turban and white baker's jacket holds a tray of fresh crusty loaves in a UK supermarket in-store bakery.

Morrisons hires customer assistants, Market Street counter staff, online colleagues, warehouse workers and managers across its supermarkets, Morrisons Daily shops and distribution sites. You apply online at morrisons.jobs. For customer assistant roles, you may then take a short online test before a face-to-face interview. Morrisons says it can take up to three weeks to review an application.

This guide explains the jobs on offer, what Morrisons says it pays, the benefits, each stage of the application, and how to prepare. We are an independent jobs site and do not work for Morrisons. Every figure below comes from Morrisons' own pages or GOV.UK, and says when we checked it.

What jobs does Morrisons hire for?

Most jobs are in stores, but Morrisons also hires for its convenience shops, warehouses, food factories and head office. The careers site splits its jobs into five areas: Retail, Convenience, Manufacturing, Logistics and Head Office.

Supermarket jobs

Morrisons says it has nearly 500 stores across the UK and over 90,000 colleagues. The biggest group of jobs is customer assistant. That can mean filling shelves, working on the checkouts, or serving on the counters.

The counters are part of what Morrisons calls Market Street. Its careers pages say its stores have butchers, bakers, fishmongers and pharmacy teams under one roof. Some customer assistant jobs are for online orders, picking shopping for home delivery. Stores also hire team leaders, managers and store managers.

Counter jobs on the fish, meat and bakery counters are part of the customer assistant role in many large stores.

Morrisons Daily jobs

Morrisons says it has nearly 1,600 convenience shops in England, Scotland and Wales. These are smaller shops, so you tend to do a bit of everything. Some have a Post Office counter. Jobs range from customer assistant to store manager and area manager.

Warehouse and factory jobs

Morrisons runs seven logistics sites. Entry-level roles there are called key operatives. You unload, pick and put away stock, and some jobs involve driving a forklift truck. Morrisons also makes food in its own factories, so you will see manufacturing jobs too.

Jobs for school and college leavers

Morrisons runs apprenticeships in butchery, fishmongery and baking. It also has a new programme called Proper Jobs: Fresh Start. Morrisons says it will create 1,000 new apprenticeships by 2030. You start with 13 weeks as a store colleague, then move on to a 12-month apprenticeship. Morrisons says the first places open at the end of September 2026 in some Yorkshire stores.

What does Morrisons pay?

Morrisons pays customer assistants above the legal minimum for over-21s. When we checked in September 2026, its customer assistant rate was £13.00 an hour, rising to £13.11 on 26 October 2026.

These rates come from a pay deal agreed with the Usdaw union in May 2026. It covers supermarket and manufacturing colleagues under that agreement. The deal passed with 91.87% of the vote. Morrisons raised pay in three steps:

DateCustomer assistant rateOther hourly rates in the deal
30 March 2026£12.81 an hourUp by 10p an hour
20 July 2026£13.00 an hourUp by a further 19p an hour
26 October 2026£13.11 an hourUp by a further 11p an hour

Eligible hourly paid staff also got a one-off payment of between £25 and £175. The amount depended on their contracted hours.

Morrisons calls these the "established" rates. The adverts we looked at said "competitive salary" rather than giving a figure. So ask about the hourly rate at your interview if the advert does not say.

How does that compare with the legal minimum?

The law sets the lowest hourly pay for each age group. These are the rates from 1 April 2026:

Your ageLegal minimum from 1 April 2026
21 and over (National Living Wage)£12.71
18 to 20£10.85
Under 18£8.00
Apprentices under 19, or in the first year£8.00

Whatever the advert says, Morrisons must pay you at least the legal rate for your age.

What benefits and staff discount do you get?

Morrisons staff get 15% off in its supermarkets and convenience shops from the day they join. You also get a second card that gives a friend or family member 10% off.

The benefits listed on a Morrisons store advert we checked in September 2026 include:

  • Holiday. At least 28 days a year, pro rata, including bank holidays. This goes up the longer you stay.
  • Pension. A pension scheme that Morrisons says all colleagues can join.
  • Life assurance. Cover from your first day in a permanent job, subject to the scheme's rules.
  • Food at work. A subsidised in-store café or subsidised shop-floor ranges.
  • Other discounts. Offers and cashback at over 1,500 other retailers, including high street shops, cinemas and gyms.
  • Health support. Video calls with a private GP through Aviva Digital GP, plus a healthcare cash plan.
  • Family leave. Full pay for the first 26 weeks of maternity or adoption leave.

The advert also listed free parking. Some roles come with extra benefits, such as a bonus, and the advert will say so.

How does the Morrisons application process work?

There are up to six stages, and most store jobs use four or five of them. Morrisons says the process can vary a little by role.

1. Find a job and apply online

Search for jobs on morrisons.jobs by job title and location. You fill in some key details about yourself and may be asked to upload your CV.

You must be over school leaving age. Morrisons' FAQs say you need to be 16 and have finished school. Some jobs need you to be 18 or over for health and safety reasons. Jobs in the kiosk or cash office also need a credit check.

2. The online assessment

For customer assistant jobs, Morrisons may email you a short online test. It is a situational judgement test with ten multiple-choice questions. Morrisons says it takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Each question describes something that could happen at work. You pick how you would respond. The advert says Morrisons wants people who put customers first, so keep that in mind.

Do it soon after the email arrives. The FAQs warn that links can expire, or stop working when lots of people apply.

3. A call or an interview booking

For some store and site roles, if your application goes well, Morrisons may simply email you to book an interview slot. For others, someone from the resourcing team may call you first to find out more about you.

4. The interview

Interviews are usually face to face, but some are by video. Part of the interview may be questions about its six "Ways of Working" (see below).

A smiling store manager with a blank notepad sits at a table in a supermarket training room, ready to interview a candidate.
Most store interviews are face to face, and many questions ask for a real example linked to a Way of Working.

5. A second interview (some roles only)

Some jobs have a second interview. Morrisons says this tends to be for head office jobs and some salaried jobs in stores and sites. You might be asked to prepare a short task, such as a SWOT analysis, and present it.

6. The decision and your checks

Morrisons will tell you the outcome. You also need to prove your right to work in the UK. Morrisons says it checks and keeps a copy of your documents before any offer is made. If you are offered a job, a partner organisation then checks the documents for it.

Is there a trial shift?

Morrisons' own description of its process does not mention a trial shift. If a store asks you to do one, ask whether it is paid and how long it lasts before you agree.

What questions does Morrisons ask at interview?

Morrisons does not publish its interview questions. It does say its interviews may include competency questions based on its six Ways of Working. So the best way to prepare is to have one real example ready for each.

Way of WorkingWhat it means in plain EnglishA question you could get
Customer FirstYou care about what customers needTell me about a time you went out of your way to help someone.
TeamworkYou play your part in the teamTell me about a time you worked with others to get something done.
Working Freely in a FrameworkYou make sensible decisions and suggest improvementsTell me about a time you found a better way to do something.
Care and RespectYou look out for the people around youTell me about a time you helped a colleague or friend who was struggling.
Listen and RespondYou listen, then do the right thingTell me about a time someone was unhappy and you put it right.
Grow Sales, Low CostYou know how your job helps the businessHow would you help keep waste down on a fresh food counter?

These are examples we wrote, based on each Way of Working. They are not Morrisons' actual questions.

How to answer with the STAR method

STAR is a simple way to shape your answer. It stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Here is an outline for the Customer First question:

  • Situation. "I was volunteering at a school fair, and an older man could not find the stall he wanted."
  • Task. "I was meant to be on the cake stall, but he looked confused and a bit upset."
  • Action. "I asked a friend to cover for two minutes, walked him over and checked he was okay."
  • Result. "He thanked the organisers afterwards, and I learned that a small effort can make someone's day."

Keep each answer to about a minute. Talk about what you did, not the group. Your example does not have to come from a job. School, college, sport, volunteering and caring for family all count.

You should also expect simple questions about you. Why do you want to work at Morrisons? What hours can you work? Our guide to common retail interview questions has more examples and sample answers.

How can you stand out when you apply?

The store advert we checked did not ask for shop experience. What helps is showing you care about customers and can work the hours. These tips are based on what Morrisons says it looks for.

  • Be clear about your hours. Many store jobs have set shift patterns, such as early mornings. The online colleague advert we checked ran from 5am to 10am. Say honestly which shifts you can work.
  • Talk about fresh food. Morrisons makes a point of its Market Street counters and its butchers, bakers and fishmongers. If you have cooked, worked in a kitchen or just love good food, say so.
  • Use the Ways of Working words. Show that you have read them. Link your examples to Customer First or Teamwork in your own words.
  • Show you like being busy. Morrisons' adverts ask for people who enjoy being active and hands-on. A sport, a physical job or helping at events are good examples.
  • Mention that you want to grow. Morrisons runs the Sir Ken Morrison Leadership School. It is a six-month course for colleagues who want to move up, with new groups starting in September, January and April. Saying you would like to progress one day shows you are thinking long term.
  • Tell them if you served in the forces. Morrisons says it guarantees veterans a call or an interview.
  • Keep your CV short. One page is enough for a customer assistant job. Our guide on how to write a retail CV shows you what to include.

Online colleague shifts can start very early, so say honestly which hours you can work when you apply.
