How to get a job at Asda

What Asda hires for, the pay it publishes, its staff discount, each stage of the application, likely interview questions and tips to stand out.

By UK Retail Jobs editorial team — We write plain-English guides to finding and doing retail work in the UK. Every figure is checked against a named source.

Asda hires store assistants, online pickers, night colleagues, delivery drivers, warehouse staff and managers across the UK. You apply online at asda.jobs, and the process can include an online assessment, a short video interview and a main interview. Asda says it aims to interview within one to two weeks of an advert closing and to give you a decision within a week of the interview.

This guide covers the jobs Asda hires for, the pay it publishes, its staff discount and benefits, each stage of the application, and the interview questions you are likely to face. We are an independent job site. We are not linked to Asda. The facts below come from Asda's own careers pages and adverts, GOV.UK, and one trade press report, which we name where we use it.

What jobs does Asda hire for?

Most Asda vacancies are store jobs, but there is also work in home delivery, warehouses, pharmacy and optical. Asda says it has over 1,000 stores across the UK and around 150,000 colleagues.

Store jobs

The main entry-level store job is the service colleague (Asda's careers site also calls it store assistant). Asda's adverts describe a mix of tasks in one role:

  • Filling shelves and unpacking deliveries.
  • Serving on the checkouts and helping customers on the shop floor.
  • Picking online orders for home delivery or collection.
  • Preparing food at counters, such as pizzas.

The adverts we read asked people to be comfortable working across different parts of the store. Asda also lists an online service colleague role, which focuses on picking shopping orders. Read each advert to see the shift and the work involved.

Store colleagues move between tasks, and that can include making fresh food at a counter.

Delivery, warehouse and specialist roles

Outside the shop floor, Asda hires in several other areas:

  • Customer delivery drivers. Asda says it delivers 1 million shops a week. Its driver page does not list licence rules, so check the advert before you apply.
  • Warehouse and logistics. Picking and moving stock in Asda's depots.
  • Pharmacy and optical. Roles in Asda's in-store pharmacies and opticians.
  • Asda Express. Smaller convenience stores. Asda says some sites also have food-to-go brands such as Greggs and Subway.

Management and early careers

Once you have experience, the next steps include team leader, night manager, customer manager, foodhall manager and general store manager. Asda also runs school leaver and degree apprenticeships and graduate schemes, listed on its early careers pages.

How much does Asda pay?

When we checked in September 2026, Asda's service colleague adverts outside London showed £13.10 an hour. That is above the legal minimum for workers aged 21 and over.

Asda raised its store pay in two steps in 2026, as reported by Personnel Today. Outside London, the rate went from £12.60 to £12.71 on 1 April and then to £13.10 on 5 July. The report says the rise covered about 110,000 frontline retail workers.

Stores inside the M25£14.35Reported by Personnel Today
Night-shift adverts we looked at£15.64Asda adverts (Radcliffe and Basildon), checked September 2026

The night-shift adverts we saw were fixed-term, part-time jobs of 15 hours a week, closing on 7 October 2026. The adverts do not explain how the higher rate is made up, so check the pay on any night advert you apply for.

How Asda's pay compares with the legal minimum

The law sets the lowest hourly rate you can be paid. From 1 April 2026, GOV.UK lists these rates:

Your ageLegal minimum hourly pay
21 and over (National Living Wage)£12.71
18 to 20£10.85
Under 18£8.00
Apprentices under 19, or in the first year£8.00

The Asda adverts we read showed one hourly rate and did not mention a different rate by age. Pay can change, so always check the figure on the advert itself.

What benefits and staff discount does Asda offer?

Asda gives colleagues a 15% discount on groceries and George clothing. Its adverts say the discount starts from day one and also covers one nominated person.

Asda's rewards page lists several other benefits, and says what you get depends on your role. The main ones for store staff are:

  • Other discounts. 10% off Asda pet insurance, travel insurance, Asda Tyres and selected pharmacy services, and 20% off Asda Mobile bundles.
  • Health support. A 24-hour remote GP service, up to eight free physiotherapy sessions a year, and free eye tests at Asda opticians.
  • Money help. A workplace pension, plus a way to draw some of your earned pay before payday.
  • Wellbeing. Free mental health support and a confidential helpline.

Some benefits on the page, such as a bonus scheme and buying extra holiday, are only for salaried staff. Check which ones apply to the job you want.

How does the Asda application process work?

You apply online, and most people then go through an assessment and an interview. Asda's hiring process page sets out the stages below. Not every role uses every stage.

1. Apply online

Find the job on asda.jobs, upload your CV and fill in the form. For some roles, you record a short video interview at this point. Asda says you should hear back within about 10 days, depending on when you applied.

Asda's culture page says the criminal convictions tick box has not been on its application form since 2020 (2022 in Northern Ireland). This is part of the Ban the Box campaign. DBS checks still apply to some roles.

2. Online assessment

Some roles ask you to complete an online assessment. Asda says it helps you learn about the role, and helps Asda see how well the role suits you and fits its values. Asda's advice is not to rush your answers.

3. Video interview

Some roles ask you to record a short video interview when you apply, rather than later on. Asda says these take only a few minutes. They are a chance to show your personality as well as your skills.

4. Main interview

The main interview is with the hiring manager, in person or on a video call. Asda says it focuses on its values and the practical skills the job needs. It aims to hold interviews one to two weeks after the advert closes.

Some roles also include an assessment centre, in one or two stages. Asda says it will tell you what to expect before the day.

5. Offer and checks

Asda aims to tell you its decision within a week of your interview. If you are successful, you get an offer letter and some checks before you start. Asda says it aims to send your contract within 48 hours.

One check is your right to work in the UK. GOV.UK explains the proof you can use, such as a passport or a share code.

Is there a trial shift?

Asda's careers pages do not mention a trial shift. Your training starts once you join. Asda says new starters complete a learning module called Flying Start in their first month, and get a tour of their store or site in the first week.

There is no trial shift, but new starters get a tour of their store in the first week.

What does Asda ask in interviews?

Asda says its interviews focus on its values, so expect questions about customers, teamwork and doing things well. Asda lists six values on its careers site. They include working as one team, making service stand out, and hating waste of any kind.

The questions below are common in retail interviews and fit those values. They are our own examples, not questions Asda has published. For each one, we give an outline using the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, the Action you took and the Result.

"Tell us about a time you gave great customer service."

  • Situation: Pick a real moment, at work, school, volunteering or helping a relative.
  • Task: Say what the person needed.
  • Action: Explain what you did, step by step, and why.
  • Result: Say how it ended. Did they leave happy, or thank you?

"Tell us about a time you worked as part of a team."

  • Situation: A group task, a sports team, a busy shift or a school project.
  • Task: Your part in it.
  • Action: How you helped others or shared the work.
  • Result: What the team achieved, and what you learned.

"How would you deal with an unhappy customer?"

  • Situation: Use a real example if you have one. If not, talk through what you would do.
  • Task: To calm things down and fix the problem if you can.
  • Action: Listen, say sorry for the trouble, stay calm, and get a manager when a problem is beyond you.
  • Result: The customer feels heard and gets an answer.

"Tell us about a time you spotted a way to do something better."

  • Situation: Anything where things were slow, messy or wasteful.
  • Task: What you noticed.
  • Action: The small change you made or suggested.
  • Result: What improved, such as time saved or less waste.

You may also be asked why you want to work at Asda, and which days and hours you can work. Be honest about your availability. For more practice, read our guide to retail jobs with no experience, which covers how to answer when you have not worked in a shop before.

How can you stand out when applying to Asda?

The best way to stand out is to show you understand what the job is really like. Asda's service colleagues move between tasks, so show you are flexible and willing to learn.

Learn Asda's values

Asda says it interviews against its values. Read them on its careers site before your assessment and your interview. Then think of one real example for a few of them, such as teamwork, customer service and cutting waste.

Be clear about your hours

Asda's adverts say what shift the job is, such as afternoons or nights. Only apply for shifts you can really work. On the form, say if you can also cover weekends and evenings, as the adverts ask for this flexibility.

Keep your CV short and relevant

Asda asks for a CV with every application. One page is enough for a store job. Put your contact details, the hours you can work, any work or volunteering, and a line about why you are good with people. Our retail CV guide has an example you can follow.

Take your time on the assessment

Answer the online questions honestly. Asda says the assessment is about how well the role suits you. It also says there is no need to rush.

Apply early for seasonal work

In September 2026 we saw Asda advertising fixed-term night jobs that closed in October. Our Christmas retail jobs guide explains when shops recruit and how a temporary job can lead to a permanent one.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a job at Asda?

It varies by role. Asda aims to give feedback on your application within about 10 days, hold interviews one to two weeks after the advert closes, and give a decision within a week of the interview. From applying to an offer, allow a few weeks.

Do I need experience to work at Asda?

Not for most store jobs. The service colleague adverts ask for things like a positive attitude, reliability, good communication and a willingness to learn, rather than past retail work.

How old do you have to be to work at Asda?

Asda's careers pages do not state a minimum age. It depends on the role, and the advert will say if there is an age limit. If you are under 18, the legal minimum pay is £8.00 an hour. The Asda adverts we read did not show a separate rate for younger workers.

Does Asda pay more for night shifts?

The night-shift adverts we looked at in September 2026 showed £15.64 an hour, compared with £13.10 for day and afternoon adverts. The adverts do not say how the rate is worked out, so check each one.

When does the Asda staff discount start?

Asda's adverts say the 15% colleague discount applies from your first day. It covers groceries and George clothing.
